COVID-19 October 29th Update

As the weather turns and we shift to indoor worship, here is what worship is going to look like in the near future:

Precautions We Are Taking

  • Arranging seating to maximize social distancing in the ballroom.

  • Opening the double doors throughout the service for increased ventilation and to avoid touching door handles.

  • Sanitizing surfaces

  • Providing hand sanitizer and extra masks for those who need them.

  • Continuing the weekly livestream for those who cannot meet in person.

Mask Requirements

Both the Connecticut DPH requirements and the Holiday Inn’s requirements for using their property mandate masking for everyone from the time they enter the building to the time they depart.

We intend to deviate from that in only two ways:

  1. The Holiday Inn understands that very young children might have trouble masking while they remain at their seats. However, any child transiting - in and out of the building, to the bathroom, etc. - must be masked.

  2. For those leading the congregation - in song, prayer, and preaching - they will be unmasked only for the time they are using a microphone, but at a greater distance from others. This is a standard practice among CT churches that have begun worshipping indoors that the DPH has not objected to.

Because congregational singing might be more difficult with masks the worship leaders plan to make accommodations - like extra measures between lines - to help us all breathe better while singing. If masked singing is too difficult for you please don’t feel bad about pausing and letting your church family sing on your behalf. Join the praises of your brothers and sisters with a melody to the Lord in your heart.

If you are unable to worship with us while masked, please join us on the livestream.

What We Ask of All Worshippers

  • Please abide by the mask-wearing requirement.

  • Please wear your mask in the correct manner, covering both your mouth and nose.

  • Please remain in your seating area during worship.

  • Please pay increased attention to social distancing. While we worshipped outdoors we enjoyed excellent ventilation. Though the ballroom has a forced air heating system it does not provide the same level of air flow as an outdoor environment. So we ask that all worshippers pay more attention to social distancing.

Shoreline Kids

During the transition back to the hotel we will not immediately resume Shoreline Kids ministry.

We recommend parents:

  • Prepare children for worship with the same ideas from the outdoor worship guide for kids.

  • Bring quiet activities for children.

  • Bring snacks for children.

  • Shoreline Kids will provide extra activities such as coloring sheets for children to enjoy.

COVID-19 July 9th Update

Shoreline Returns to the Book of Matthew – In the Lord’s providence, the final sermon we preached before the COVID shutdown was a preview for Matthew’s finale, setting in motion all the actions that spark the book’s climax. And this Sunday we resume the narrative! Refresh your memory of how Matthew puts all the pieces in place for the grand climax: Head to the Matthew sermons page and listen again to the March 8th sermon on Matthew 26:1-16.

New Sunday Service Time – We plan to continue meeting outside (with the same reminders for adults and children) at the Leach home. In order to beat the heat we’ll begin our worship at 9:30am. If you do not already have the address, please email us at info@shorelinecbchurch.com.

COVID-19 June 13th Update

Shoreline,
After 13 Sundays apart, we’re excited to announce that we plan to resume in-person worship this Sunday, June 14 at 10am!

We do not yet have access to the Holiday Inn ballroom so we will meet outdoors at the Leach’s house. If you do not already have the address, please email info@shorelinecbchurch.com for directions.

How To Participate

Parking: Parking spaces will be on the left-hand side of the driveway.

Transit: When you leave your vehicle please head for the rear of the house, together with anyone you came with, while maintaining 6 feet of separation between yourself and other members of the congregation.

Seating: We will worship in the backyard. When you arrive you will see large circles painted on the grass. These are designed to promote a safe physical distance in accordance with health officials’ guidance. Please choose one of these circles and remain there for the duration of the service.

Children: Since social distancing will be very difficult for our youngsters we will not have Shoreline Kids children’s programming. Instead:

  • Children will remain in their family’s circle throughout the service.

  • We will be giving lots of grace to families with respect to noise and various disruptions. We’re happy to worship with you and do not mind a ruckus!

  • If your child needs to roam please take them behind the last row of circles so they can release their energy and still maintain physical distance.

  • Shoreline Kids will email a discussion guide to parents later this week to help you instruct your children on how to participate.

What to Bring

  • Folding Chairs

  • Sunscreen

  • Snacks & Water

  • Activities for Children

  • Sun Shades: You are welcome to bring a sun shade such as a beach umbrella. If you plan on setting up a sun shade, please select a circle towards the rear of the seating area so you do not obstruct other people’s views.

Fellowship Guidelines
It will be a wonderful thing to see our congregation in person again. We are certain that, like on any normal Sunday, many of you will want to remain afterwards and catch up with your church family.

In order to put others’ interests before our own, please follow these guidelines:

  • At the conclusion of our worship service, please stay seated.

  • We will announce that those who plan to depart may do so at that time.

  • After those members of the congregation depart, please feel free to spend time in fellowship.

  • While you converse please observe the kinds of physical protections we have grown accustomed to: 6 feet of distance or masks.

If You Can’t Attend
Please do not attend if you are sick, if you suspect you are sick, or if a doctor has instructed you not to gather.

Further, if you feel that you ought not attend a group gathering right now because you have additional risk factors, will be caring for someone at risk, or do not yet feel safe in a worship gathering, please do not feel pressure to attend.

If you are not in attendance this Sunday you won’t be left out! We plan to continue live streaming our worship for the foreseeable future for all those who cannot participate in person.

Inclement Weather
The current forecast expects a partly cloudy morning and then a chance of showers on Sunday afternoon. If the weather turns we will notify you Saturday evening (via email, Facebook, and our website) that the outdoor gathering is canceled.

If we cancel the outdoor gathering we will return to the streaming format we’ve grown accustomed to throughout the shutdown. We will also let you know which Shoreline homes are hosting in-person “watch parties” so you can worship together with the livestream in health-officials’ recommended group sizes

COVID-19 April 7 Update

Shoreline,

Here’s an update for everything going on at Shoreline for Holy Week!

Community Groups

Now, perhaps more than ever, Shoreline’s community groups are critical to the life of our church. These groups are one of the best ways for you to serve and be served by your church family, maintain spiritual friendships, and grow as a disciple of Christ throughout the coronavirus quarantine.

Our community groups are still meeting virtually and if you're not yet part of one of our groups, contact us to join one!

Holy Week

This past Sunday marked the Sunday before Easter, often called Palm Sunday, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem as her king. Here are some

Palm Sunday: Pastor Dave preached the Triumphal Entry in Matthew 21:1-17 on Nov 10th. We hope you are blessed by hearing that sermon again on the Matthew sermon series page.

Holy Week Devotional: Consider joining other members of Shoreline in this Holy Week Bible reading plan.

Resurrection Eggs: This Sunday the Shoreline Kids lesson will include props to tell the Easter story. See Miss Allison explain them here. Shoreline kids would like to deliver these to each home that would like to participate. If you haven’t already signed up for a special delivery please click here!

Good Friday: Friday evening we will consider the cross of Christ together as a church family. Watch your inbox for timing and streaming info.

Easter Sunday: This Sunday we are planning a larger live stream than we have had these past three weeks. This will include streams from more than one Shoreline household! To make that work we will be using Zoom rather than YouTube Live to stream the service. Stay tuned for more details!

Randy Matthews

For those who haven’t met Randy, he serves the global church by traveling to communities that don’t have formal pastoral training to bring the training to them.

Randy returned safely from Myanmar before quarantine measures prevented travel, but has had to cancel his April trip. As he waits to see when he can travel again he is developing new plans and coaching leaders remotely.

Randy has asked for prayer in these areas:

  • Effectiveness in his virtual coaching - The communities he serves often have limited access to the technology that support remote training.

  • Wise planning for future ministry.

  • That the Lord would bring a swift end to this pandemic so his gospel work can continue.

  • Check out this document with Randy’s full list of prayer requests for each people group he serves.

Join Shoreline in Song and Prayer

If you miss lifting your voice in praise along with your brothers and sisters in Christ, warm your heart with the catalogue of songs Shoreline sings together when we gather for worship: The Songs We Sing.

And we've also put together a playlist of songs to help you worship through uncertainty and trials called Worship Through the Night

Join the rest of your church family in lifting these prayer requests (prayed over at this past Saturday’s men’s prayer meeting) to the Lord.

Giving

For those who normally give tithes and offerings in person on Sundays, there are digital and mail-in options for giving you can check out on the Shoreline website.

Sharing the Gospel During Social Distancing

Take Gospel Hope Where The People Are

The COVID 19 pandemic has a lot of people afraid and a lot of people home. As Christians, we have a hope to share that squarely addresses those fears. This frightening moment offers us a unique opportunity to share the hope of the gospel!

But to connect people to that hope, we need to take the message of the gospel to those who need it. Where are people right now? Sheltering at home. And what are they doing there? Many of them have heavily increased their use of social media - to connect with loved ones, to stay informed, and for entertainment.

So the elders want to equip you to take gospel hope to where people are right now.

Part 1: Start the Conversation

Pray

It is the Lord who gives us the strength and love to witness to our friends. And it’s the Holy Spirit who works in people’s hearts to draw them to himself. So pray for boldness and clarity for yourself, and receptivity in your friends.

Option 1: Share Your Testimony

The most direct way to share your faith on social media is to post your testimony either by typing a post or recording a video. Consider hitting these points:

Why are you posting this message now?

Coronavirus has people thinking about their mortality. It has also added a lot of pressures and caused a lot of stress. In contrast, the gospel is the answer to death, calms our fears, is a better and more lasting treasure than the things of this world, and offers many other benefits.

So why do you want to share the gospel right now? Do you want to offer people hope in the face of danger? Do you want to offer people the comfort walking with the Lord brings to daily life?

What is the gospel? In your own words explain how we’re separated from God by our sin, how Christ took our punishment in his cross, and how he offers forgiveness of sin, everlasting life, and adoption as his children by grace through faith.

Some helpful gospel presentations to help you organize your thoughts:

How does the gospel affect you in this moment? Coronavirus is scary. How does the gospel personally affect and reassure you right now? What comfort do you think Christ will offer your friends?

Invite them to respond. Invite your friends to ask you more! Ask them to continue the conversation, ask you questions, or click a link to a Bible verse you find comforting.

Option 2: Invite People With Gospel Conversation Starters

If posting your testimony directly isn’t your style, invite people to ask you about the gospel instead. Here are some conversation starters you can post (feel free to modify them!) to invite people to ask you about the peace you have in Christ:

This pandemic is causing a lot of frustration and worry for people right now. I have peace in the midst of this situation because of Jesus. I'd love to share that peace with you if you don't already have it. Message me or call me and we’ll talk more!

Hi friends, if you’re struggling with worry and fear during the coronavirus can I please pray with you and share some hope with you?

If the coronavirus has you down, I’d love to share with you how I am still finding joy through my faith. Please give me a call or send me a message so we can talk.

In the midst of a global crisis, I’m comforted that this world is not my home and I have a hope and a future. I would love to share that hope with you if you haven’t already found it.

Consider adding an attention-grabbing picture to your post like one of these.

If Your Aren’t on Social Media

This concept - offering the hope and comfort of the gospel to those in crisis - isn’t limited to Facebook. If you aren’t on social media evangelism is still for you!

Even through these social distancing protocols you are still likely in touch with people you care about in other ways. In those conversations your loved ones are probably expressing the same kinds of pressures and uncertainties that foster the kinds of conversations mentioned above.

So modify and use any of the examples in option 2 above in your texts, emails, and phone calls.

Part 2: Continue the Conversation

Once a friend expresses an interest in discussing the hope of the gospel, here are some tips for continuing the conversation:

Take the Conversation Off The Timeline

We don’t recommend having that conversation in the comments section of your initial post. This is a personal conversation and will be helped by making it a real-time conversation.

Ask your friend to jump on a video chat or a phone call if they can. That way you can communicate in real time, show the care and concern you have in your voice, and show them the joy you have in Christ with the smile on your face!

Think About Their Biggest Fear

There are two kinds of fear the coronavirus is likely to raise in people, and the gospel addresses both:

Mortality: Whether sick or not, the pandemic forces us to examine the frailty of our lives. Every one of us needs to address the fact that we will one day die, whether from coronavirus or some other cause. The intensity of this situation is making people think about death much more readily.

To the question of mortality, the gospel says: “In Christ, death is not final!”

Some passages you might share with your friends: John 3:16, Eph 2:1-10, 1 Thes 4:13–18

The Stress of Today’s Difficulty: No matter how COVID 19 impacts your life, it’s adding stress. Some people might be facing job loss, frenzied schedules, being thrown into homeschooling with no preparation, and other big stresses.

The gospel doesn’t just give us a hope for tomorrow. It gives us Christ with us right now! We walk with God through the hard things and he provides us peace in the midst of trouble.

Some passages you might share with your friends: Psalm 23, 1 Pet 1:3-12

In your conversation try to sense which fear your friend feels most threatened by and guide the conversation towards the gospel truths that address that.

Answer Questions and Objections

People who don’t know Christ probably don’t know much about Christianity, so expect to be asked questions!

Their questions might be…

  • Informational: What is the Bible? Who is Jesus? What is grace? Is God real?

  • Personal: Does God really love me? Why do you believe the Bible? What is being a Christian like? Does your faith really help you?

  • Apologetic: Why doesn’t God just stop the coronavirus?

There are too many possible questions for the Shoreline elders to help you in advance. Don’t feel bad saying, “I’m not quite sure how to answer that yet,” and reach out to us for help!

Don’t Feed the Trolls

Some people won’t like the fact that you post your testimony or an invitation. They might call you names, they might slander your motives, or some other form of opposition.

The Lord told us to expect this:

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.” Matt 10:24–25

However, he also promised:

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matt 5:11–12

If your post receives any kind of slander, we don’t recommend you try to defend yourself. Trolls are normally in it for the sport, not for the truth.

Conclusion

The elders are committed to helping Shoreline live out our mission: Proclaim, Build, Serve. Proclaiming the gospel of Christ might be the most challenging aspect of that call while social distancing protocols are in place. We’re praying for you - that the Lord would grant you boldness to be an evangelist in this moment and that he will give you success!

COVID-19 March 20 Update

Shoreline,

We are praying for you and hope that you are finding peace and strength in God our refuge. We want to keep you updated about what's going on at Shoreline and what to expect in the next week or so.

Current health and safety guidance recommends suspending group meetings of 10 or more people. To love our neighbors well, the elders plan to abide by that recommendation and suspend in-person Shoreline worship.

But we will continue to act as a church family! Our priority through this unusual time is retaining pastoral care and fostering ongoing fellowship and communication throughout the congregation.

Here’s what you can expect this week:

Pastoral Care: The elders are touching base with every individual or family in the Shoreline directory to check in, see how you’re doing, and ask how we can serve and pray for you. If you have spiritual or physical needs before check in again, feel free to reach out to any of the elders or contact us online.

Community Groups: We are recommending our community groups use wisdom in choosing how to meet. You do not need to suspend in-person gatherings, but if you choose to do so please continue meeting digitally for prayer and fellowship. We are working with your community group leaders to help make this as accessible as possible.

(The women’s prayer group is also canceled tonight.)

If your group continues to meet in person, we recommend you meet for your normal weekly gathering and again on Sunday morning to sing and pray together with the Sunday message from the elders (see below).

If you don’t have a community group, now is a great time to join one! Fill out the connection form and we’ll get you plugged in.

Fostering Fellowship: The elders strongly encourage you to continue and even increase the amount you communicate with your church family

  • Serve your brothers and sisters (and your own joy!) with phone calls, texts, video chats, and social media messages. Start with your community group and expand from there. For starters, ask how they are doing and how you can pray for them. This is the single best way for you to stay connected and to serve your church family.

  • Watch for increased use of the Shoreline Facebook page. If you have a FB account look for new ways to engage soon.

If you feel like you need help connecting, please let us know and we’ll get you paired up right away!

Sunday Worship: The gathering of the saints together is precious and unique. It is not something that can be replicated online, no matter how polished the execution. We will not attempt to recreate a Sunday worship service while our meetings are suspended.

Instead, on Sunday morning, we will give a short pastoral update, prayer, and devotional that can be streamed live or watched later in the day. Stay tuned for details on how to tune in.

In all these things, we are striving to be the church to one another as we follow Christ in this unique moment. Our hope for Shoreline is not just that we would survive this difficult time. Instead, we pray that through these efforts of fellowship the Lord knits us closer together as a family.

If you have any needs or suggestions please let the elders or deacons know!

In Christ,

The Shoreline Elders

Dave, Jordan, Matt, Mike

COVID 19 Update - March 16

Dear Church,

The elders are praying for you! Our prayer is that you would hold fast to Christ in the midst of uncertainty, be an example of his love to others, and that you would stay healthy.

We want to keep you updated and informed this week in a number of areas:

If You Have Practical Needs

We are looking for ways we might be able to help those in our congregation who may need meals, supplies or other care due to sickness, loss of work hours, quarantine, concerns about leaving the house, etc. We are the body of Christ and moments like this are when we can – and must – unite to care for each other. If you need practical help, or if you know someone else who does, contact a fellow church member, deacon, or elder. If you can offer practical help, let us know that too.

If You Have Spiritual Needs

If the uncertainty or hardship of this event is affecting you spiritually please reach out for help. Your fellow church members, your community group leaders, and your pastors all stand ready to pray with you, comfort you from the Word, and bear your burdens with you.

Please don’t hesitate to call Pastor Dave (860-629-0319), email the church (info@shorelinecbchurch.com) or fill out our connect form online.

Community Groups

We encourage community groups to continue meeting throughout this time, as health officials still believe small group gatherings pose a low risk for the spread of the virus. Christian fellowship is especially important through this challenging season.

However, we ask that everybody use wisdom in deciding whether it is best to stay home or to attend.

Please do not attend community group if you or any household members have any flu-like symptoms, especially a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or fatigue. Also, please stay home if you have interacted with potentially affected people or traveled to an affected region within the past two weeks. If you are over the age of 60 or if you have a chronic health condition, please follow recommended precautions.

If You Have Extra Time

If cancellations and social distancing practices have given you additional free time, we recommend you use it wisely in ways that honor Christ and build his church:

Caring for Children

Families will likely experience additional pressures in caring for and comforting children throughout this season. Be on the lookout for updates from Shoreline Kids!

Next Sunday

We are putting together a plan for worship next Sunday in a way that will foster our church community, protect the vulnerable, and honor God. Stay tuned for updates later in the week!

In Christ,

The Shoreline Elders (Dave, Jordan, Matt and Mike)

COVID 19 - March 13 Update

Dear Church,

In light of the recent outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus), we want to keep you informed on how we are responding as a church. We are monitoring the situation in our area and will keep you informed of the decisions we make. In light of God's word, we are seeking to respond with courage (in a time when fear abounds) and also with prudence (in light of significant concerns and uncertainty). We plan to follow CDC and local government requirements and will keep you posted about service information.

Shepherding the Flock
As elders our first concern is to give our church family pastoral encouragement:

The most important thing to remember is that, for every Christian, your life is hidden with Christ. There is no sickness or trial that can separate you from your Savior and your soul is safe with him. Even if the very worst should come to pass, you will find yourself with your Lord in glory.

Second, if this pandemic is causing you great anguish, Christ is with you right now so you can walk with him through your worries today. Now is an excellent time to pray through Psalms that remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness. We recommend Psalms 23 and 46 to start. If you need help praying the Psalms, let us suggest the little book ‘Praying the Bible’ by Donald Whitney.

Third, if you need personal prayer and encouragement, please let us know. The Lord has given you a church family for a reason. Either reach out to your community group or reply to this email to ask for one of the pastors to get in touch with you.

Fourth, we are presently identifying ways we might be able to help those in our congregation who may need meals, supplies or other care due to sickness, loss of work hours, quarantine, concerns about leaving the house, etc. We are the body of Christ and moments like this are when we can – and must – unite to care for each other. If you need practical help, or if you know someone else who does, contact a fellow church member, deacon, or elder. If you can offer practical help, let the church office know that too.

This Sunday
The elders believe that the best way to love and serve both our congregation and our community this week is to not gather for worship this Sunday.

This Sunday there are three worship options we suggest:

  • Worship with Young Children: The elders recommend that families with young children:

    • Explain that we are not gathering with our church family out of love to make sure no one gets sick.

    • Pray for our church, for those affected by the virus, and for those helping with the response.

    • Sing a song of worship together.

    • Stream the gospel presentation The Biggest Story.
(If you need help with the streaming cost, please reply to this email.)

  • Catch Up at Shoreline: Follow along with this week’s worship music at Shoreline, catch up on a sermon from our Matthew series that you missed, and pray for your church family, our nation’s leaders, the global advancement of the gospel, and against the spread of the virus.

  • Stream a Sister Church: Trinity Baptist helped Shoreline launch in 2015. They have canceled their worship service as well this week and will be streaming a live broadcast of Pastor Nick preaching a very timely message from Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
To stream the Trinity service go to the Trinity website and follow the instructions to listen to the worship service, beginning Sunday at 10 a.m.

In all these options you can continue to support the mission of our church by praying and giving online.

Looking Ahead
We do not know what the future holds. However, we do know Who holds it.

Shoreline will continue in faith to serve and worship our King in confident prudence. The elders and deacons will continue to monitor recommendations from public health officials and adjust our practices accordingly.

It is the elders’ heart to provide an opportunity for Shoreline to worship together as soon as possible, hopefully, next week. Canceling this Sundays' corporate gathering will afford some additional time to accomplish this in a wise and helpful manner. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to set aside time this Sunday morning to seek the Lord individually, as a family, or in small groups.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
